After graduating with a Diploma in Education from Makerere University College in 1956, he taught at various schools in Kenya and Uganda, including Kagumo High School, Thika High School and Namilyango High School in Uganda.

He left teaching in 1962 to study diplomacy, eventually becoming Kenya’s first chargé d’affaires in Paris before being appointed the Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After retiring from the civil service in 1974, he joined East Africa Industries as the company secretary and head of personnel and human resources. He was subsequently appointed general manager responsible for the Oils Crops Development Division. He resigned in 1983 to focus on the Riara Primary School, which he and his wife Eddah had founded in 1974.

Riara Primary School soon earned a reputation for academic excellence and as an institution where children received individualised attention and quality instruction. Before long, the Gachukias added Riara Kindergarten, Riara Springs Kindergarten, Riara Springs Primary, Riara Springs Girls’ High School, Riara International and Riara University, creating the Riara Group of Schools.

In addition to serving as the director and chairman of the Riara Group of Schools, Mr Gachukia is currently the patron of the Kenya Private Schools’ Association, which he help create in 1994. He has also been the chairman of the board of governors of Thika High School, and is a former member and chairman of the Kenyatta University Council.

She immediately joined Thika High School where she taught for 3 years. She proceeded to the University of Leeds where she specialised in teaching English as a second language. Upon her return to Kenya she was appointed the head of the general methods section of the Kenya Institute of Education specialising in curriculum research and development.

Still keen to further her own education, she joined the University of Nairobi and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature in 1971. She was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi from 1973 -1987, before obtaining a PhD in 1981.

In addition to education, Dr. Gachukia has been deeply involved in the women’s movement both in Kenya and globally. She played a pivotal role in the 1985 UN Conference on Women held in Nairobi, and has served in various capacities at the the National Council of Women of Kenya, Maendeleo ya Wanawake, the YWCA and the Collaborative Centre for Gender and Development.

She was a nominated Member of Parliament from 1974 -1983, using her position to advocate for greater legal protections for women. In later years she was a member of several education review task forces and ultimately chaired the task force that guided the implementation of free primary education in Kenya. Merging her passions for girls’ rights and education, Dr. Gachukia was the founding executive director of the Forum for African Women Educationalists, a non-governmental pan-African organisation. Based in Nairobi, FAWE is comprised of African female ministers of education and university vice-chancellors. The NGO concentrates on the promotion of policies and practices aimed at the enhancement of girls’ education and has a presence in over 30 African countries.

She has served on the board of governors of Kenya High School, Alliance Girls High School and State House Road Girls High School. She is the former director of the Institute of Policy Analysis and Research, and has served on the boards of Kenya Airways, Nation Newspapers and is the former chair of Uchumi Supermarkets.
